Susan Barber, AP Literature and American Literature teacher at Northgate High School, was named the Coweta County School System’s Teacher of the Year. She was among 31 teachers selected by their peers for the prestigious award. The three finalists were Barber, Anne Graner, Media Specialist at Ruth Hill Elementary School, and Mindy Baker, Sixth Grade Mathematics Teacher at East Coweta Middle School.

The refurbished Howard Warner School is now a community center with a ribbon cutting building held recently. It will be used for a second Boys and Girls Club in Newnan. The facility was at one point the segregated African American school.

Bill Headley completed a quest that took 60 years. He recently graduated from the University of West Georgia. The kicker is he’s 82. Headley enrolled at Auburn University in his early 20s, but flunked out and joined the U.S. Army as a paratrooper. He later headed up Headley Construction.

Columbus Regional Health and Piedmont Healthcare have signed a Letter of Intent, initiating an exclusive negotiation period between the two organizations. Should the negotiations prove successful, Columbus Regional will become Piedmont’s regional “hub” for clinical services in Southwest Georgia. Columbus Regional Health’s two hospitals – Midtown Medical Center and Northside Medical Center, as well as its John B. Amos Cancer Center, MyCare Urgent Care Centers and multiple physician practices – would be included in the partnership.

Kicking off June 5, the 2017 Summer Reading Program will feature visits by Cochran Mills Reptile Show, Mad Scientist Doc Atoms, Drummer Dave Holland, and fan favorite Magician Ken Scott. In addition, other featured shows will be a visit from The Zoo Atlanta Zoo-mobile, Mindcraft Mobile Interactive science museum, and the Winged Ambassadors Birds of Prey.

West Georgia Tech has expanded its GED-to-college program – which allows students enrolled in Adult Education classes to apply to certificate and diploma classes at the college – from only four eligible programs to approximately 100 programs, now including almost all of the college’s certificate and diploma classes. To be eligible to apply, students must be enrolled in one of West Georgia Tech’s Adult Education classes, have passed two of the four GED subtests and have met the entrance (Accuplacer) requirements of the program to which they’re applying.

Derenda Rowe is retiring as head of the One Roof Ecumenical Outreach Alliance, which she held found more than 10 years ago. moved to Coweta 13 years ago, she had no idea she’d end up running a nonprofit organization – let alone becoming its founding executive director. Dr. David Gregory, former homeless liaison with the Coweta County School System, will be the new executive director. One Roof was founded by several local churches and provides various services for needy Cowetans, including a food pantry and thrift store.

Officials at Piedmont Healthcare are raising the starting wage to $11 per hour, an amount that exceeds the federal minimum wage by more than 50 percent. The new standard will include employees at all seven of Piedmont’s hospitals as well as Piedmont’s employed physician practices and corporate services. Approximately 250 current Piedmont employees will benefit from the increase.

Famous TV preacher Joel Osteen and his wife Victoria have been accused of colluding with the devil after they posed for photos with their son as he graduated from the University of Texas. The renowned televangelists documented their son Jonathan’s graduation in Austin on Saturday by taking photos of themselves throwing a ‘Hook ‘em Horns’ hand signal. The spirited hand gesture has long been used at the university to represent its Texas Longhorn Bevo mascot.

But it clearly didn’t bode well with some of their millions of Twitter followers who complained the megachurch family was using the devil’s sign.

A multi-use trail system throughout Coweta County has gotten approved by both the city of Newnan and county commissioners. The approved master plan calls for a 25.5 mile trail that is broken down into 15 segments.

According to a new report by FilmL.A, 17 feature films were shot in Georgia in 2016, beating California as the top location for feature film production. That also makes the state the number one filming location in the world. The report said the United Kingdom came in second for shooting with 16 feature films, with Canada taking third place with 13. Meanwhile, California was in fourth place with 12 feature productions and New York, and Louisiana tied for fifth place.

The 2017 Leadership Coweta class graduated with 21 professionals. Sponsored by the Newnan-Coweta Chamber, Leadership Coweta provides existing and emerging leaders with unique opportunities to enhance their civic knowledge of Coweta County and to sharpen their leadership skills and to network with leaders from across the community.

A Veterans 5K Run, organized by Newnan High School students and history professors, collected $12,000. The money was then donated for veterans programs and accepted by John Skinner, commander of VFW Post 2667, during Memorial Day ceremonies.

Typo Market in Downtown Newnan is moving a couple of doors down and to street level. The store’s new address will be 11 Greenville Street, which was occupied by the Army Tactical store. Grand opening is set for July 1 with a grand prize drawing of $100 of store products that day.
