From Special Reports
William C. Statton, M.D., FACS, who recently joined Piedmont Physicians Surgical Specialists in Newnan, says anti-reflux surgery is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that provides relief for long-time sufferers.
“Many patients have been suffering from acid reflux and heartburn for more than 20 or 30 years with little relief from medications or changes in lifestyle,” said Dr. Statton, who is certified by the American Board of Surgery, and has a special interest in minimally invasive abdominal and thoracic surgery as well as breast, anti-reflux and robotic surgery. “After surgery, patients can expect an overnight stay and should be back to work in a week.”
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic digestive disease affecting between 42 to 64 million adults in the U.S. Many people manage symptoms with medication or lifestyle changes, such as not eating after 6 p.m. or raising the head of their bed. But for some, this does not provide relief and surgery may be needed. It can also lead to esophageal diseases and puts sufferers at a higher risk for cancer of the esophagus.
“Different patients have different symptoms. If you experience acid reflux and/or heartburn at least twice a week or it is affecting your daily life, despite maximal treatment with medication, I recommend scheduling an appointment to discuss treatment options,” said Dr. Statton. “Sometimes this disease causes damage to a person’s esophagus and needs to be treated immediately.”
Prior to joining Piedmont Physicians, Dr. Statton worked in private practice for over 10 years. He is a member of the Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the Society of Surgeons of the Alimentary Tract and the Society of Surgical Oncology. As a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he is experienced in a wide range of surgical treatments, including general and thoracic surgery. In his spare time, Dr. Statton enjoys reading, writing, hiking, traveling and spending time with his wife and six adopted children.
Available at Piedmont Physicians Surgical Services, 710 Newnan Crossing Bypass, Suite 200, Newnan, Ga., Dr. Statton welcomes new patients and accepts most insurance plans. To schedule an appointment, call 678-423-7860. For more information, visit piedmont.org/DrStatton.
