From Special Reports

Downtown Newnan will be the site as local artwork will be on display for the Fall Art Walk on Friday, Sept. 14.

The Art Walk Event is our celebration of local art, and is hosted twice a year in Downtown Newnan! The event is from 5-9 p.m. Also scheduled that evening is a free Jazz concert presented by the Newnan Cultural Arts Commission, which will occur at the Greenville Street Park, beginning at 8 p.m. The performer for the Fall Jazz in the Park is Groove Centric.

During the Art Walk, businesses extend their hours to host store-front exhibits and demonstrations curated by a variety of Newnan’s finest artists. Complimentary tastings and hors d’oeuvres will be served by some of our local businesses, as well as specials and promotions. Visitors can expect to stroll through over 30 locations and see the work of at least 40 artists, and you will find a wide variety of art styles and mediums, including: oil on canvas, engraving, pottery, photography, jewelry-making, fiber arts, performing arts and acrylics. The downtown streets and sidewalks are sure to be filled with unexpected talent and delightful entertainment! There is no fee for admission to this event.

Saxophonist Mike Jones and guitarist Rod Harris gave birth to concert headliner Groove Centric in 2008 while on the local gig scene in Atlanta. They have since grown to a trendsetting band that has played around the city at venues such as St. James Jazz Restaurant, Churchill Grounds, the legendary Paschal’s Restaurant, Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint, The Artmore Hotel, Jazz Café, Acoustix Jazz Restaurant, Ambiance Lounge, The Jazz Loft, Michon’s Loft and many other venues.

Collectively, they have played with artists such as Malcolm Jamal-Warner, Monica, Musiq Soulchild, Jimmy Heath, India Arie, Jeff Lorber, Oliver Lake, Mighty Blues Kings, Sonny Emory and Al Green to name a few. Their familiarity with a myriad of styles became recognizable as they progressed and by 2009, the band had already been invited to headline several jazz festivals. Their evolution has given way to music that is now a complete embodiment of jazz, neo-soul, R&B, blues, pop, and funk.

As adept musicians, Groove Centric will take you on a ride beginning with a classic Miles Davis song, transition to the smooth sounds of Jill Scott and end by leaving you grooving to the head bopping funk of James Brown and Earth Wind and Fire. Groove Centric’s mission is to captivate you with their eclectic blend of R&B, jazz and blues and leave you yearning for more. Mike Jones on sax is now joined by Keith Barnes on guitar, Joel Powell on bass and Brien Andrews on drums.
