From Special Reports

Sandy Holcomb has been named Newnan-Coweta Art Association’s Artist of the Month for January.  She resides in Fayette County and is a retired middle school teacher.

Recently, Holcomb, and eight other Georgia artists went to Italy on a plein-air painting trip.  They stayed in a villa in the mountains above the city of Lucca in the Tuscany region. The group went out on daily painting excursions that were close enough to be day trips. The paintings she is exhibiting at City Hall are mostly paintings that were painted in Italy.

Except for one piece, all of the exhibited artwork was begun as plein-air paintings.

After retiring from teaching middle school (not art), she began to paint a great deal more.  Holcomb painted with watercolor and pastels for a few years but fell in love with oils when she tried them.  She mostly paints with oils now.

“I feel very blessed to be able to paint at this point in my life.  I think I may appreciate it more now than I would have when I was younger,” Holcomb comments.

Sandy Holcomb is a member and past president of the Fayette Society of Fine Art in Fayetteville.  She is also a member of Arts Clayton Gallery in Jonesboro, Blue Ridge Mountain Arts Association in Blue Ridge, GA, and the Fayette Arts and Crafts Entrepreneurs.  She has had several paintings in the Governor’s offices in the capital over the past three years.  Recently, Governor and Mrs. Deal added one of Holcomb’s painting to their private collection, after it had hung in his ceremonial office for a year.

Holcomb is a member of the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church and the Fayette County Retired Educators.

Holcomb remarks, “Newnan is a great place with so many talented artists. I have so enjoyed getting to know and to become friends with so many of them.”

Sandy Holcomb is a member of the Newnan-Coweta Art Association.  NCAA meets the third Thursday each month (from September through May) at the Harriet Alexander Art Center on Hospital Road at 7 p.m.  Visitors and new members are welcome.  An art demonstration is presented each month.  Come and join the fun.
